The Petzl Chicane is an auxiliary braking device designed to allow ZIGZAG and ZIGZAG PLUS mechanical Prusiks to be used safely and efficiently on single rope systems in tree care. Developed for professional arborists, it provides continuous additional friction during descents while maintaining smooth rope movement during ascents. When used as part of an assembled unit with a compatible connector, the Chicane supports controlled positioning and predictable handling on low stretch kernmantel ropes.

Controlled braking for single rope techniques

The Chicane delivers continuous additional braking action through the use of two integrated friction pins. This added friction improves descent control when working on single rope systems, supporting smoother modulation under load. The device is designed to operate with ropes between 11.5 mm and 13 mm in diameter and is compatible with EN 1891 type A low stretch kernmantel ropes, making it suitable for recognised professional climbing setups.

Smooth movement during ascent and limb walking

When assembled with a ZIGZAG or ZIGZAG PLUS mechanical Prusik and used with a compatible Am’D or OK connector, the Chicane forms a balanced system that allows the rope to glide smoothly through the braking device during ascents. The ergonomic handle offers a secure grip and supports efficient movement when limb walking, helping the climber maintain fluid motion while repositioning in the canopy.

Secure installation and long-term durability

Installation is quick and straightforward thanks to the openable side plate, which allows the device to be fitted directly onto the rope. A triple action unlocking mechanism limits the risk of accidental opening during use. The Chicane connects to the upper hole of the mechanical Prusik and is built from aluminium, steel, and nylon for durability. The two friction pins are designed for extended service life and are available as spare parts, supporting long-term professional use.
